Explosive car accident kills one

Posted on Friday, January 27th, 2012 at 11:30 pm

One person has been pronounced dead after the driver collided with a tanker truck carrying nearly 8,000 gallons of gasoline Tuesday morning.

The accident occurred around 1:45am in Elizabeth on Route 1 and 9. The collision caused a massive explosion that awoke residents near by. Authorities have been unable to identify the driver of the car who was trapped under the tanker when a fireball erupted.

The truck driver was able to escape without serious injury. Residents were evacuated as a precaution while the Elizabeth Fire Department flushed out storm drains.  So far officials are unsure of who had the right-of-way. Homeowners believe that street racing could be to blame.
