19 cars involved in fatal Florida crashes

Posted on Thursday, February 2nd, 2012 at 9:07 pm

A total of 11 people lost their lives in Florida on Sunday morning after poor visibility gave way to several car accidents.

The car accidents took place on both the southbound and northbound lanes of Interstate 75. They occurred around 3:45 a.m. when serious smoke and fog clouded the lanes of the highway. Drivers could not see at all in some areas and began colliding into one another. Two large semi-trailers completely stopped in their lanes, causing additional accidents to take place behind them.

Emergency personnel on the scene were unable to locate hurt individuals due to the visibility conditions. People were located by their voices and screams. Cars were wedged under trailers, and piled on top of one another. A few cars were even engulfed in flames when the rescue crews responded to the scene. In addition to the 11 deaths, 18 people were injured.
